May 6, 2002 -- The world's first fuel cell/gas turbine power plant is now generating electricity.

The system combines the Siemens Westinghouse solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with an Ingersoll Rand microturbine at the National Fuel Cell Research Center on the campus of the University of California at Irvine.

Siemens Westinghouse and Southern California Edison have announced that the hybrid has passed a key site acceptance test and the major endurance phase of its test program. The hybrid operates at a pressure of 3 atmospheres.

The integrated SOFC/microturbine hybrid produces about 200 kW.
