WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 6, 2002 -- Eugene W. Zeltmann, president of the New York Power Authority, was appointed chief executive officer by Power Authority trustees at a recent meeting.
"Gene Zeltmann has done a superb job as president and chief operating officer," said Louis P. Ciminelli, Power Authority chairman. "We expect that he will bring to these new responsibilities the same aura of competence he always exhibits."
Ciminelli, who was elected chairman by his fellow trustees Tuesday, and Zeltmann assume responsibilities formerly held by Joseph J. Seymour, who resigned as chairman and chief executive officer to become executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Seymour remains a Power Authority trustee.
Zeltmann originally was named president and chief operating officer by the board of trustees in September 1997.
At the Power Authority, Zeltmann has been a strong advocate for expanded research, development and implementation of energy efficiency measures. He has put particular emphasis on promoting workforce safety.
He is vice chairman of the board of EPRI (the Electric Power Research Institute).
He is active in a number of civic and educational organizations including the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady; the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra; the Adirondack Scenic Railroad; the Albany chamber of Commerce; the Westchester County Association; the Advisory Board to the Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the board of the Westchester Community College Foundation.
Prior to joining NYPA -- the nation's largest state-owned electric utility -- he was appointed by Governor George E. Pataki to serve as a commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) in December 1995. Commissioner Zeltmann was named Deputy Chairman of the PSC on May 30, 1996.
Zeltmann had more than 20 years of international trade and government relations experience as an executive with the General Electric Company. He joined the company in 1967, serving in many senior management positions related to energy and environmental trade issues, market-development and communications programs, and operational and environmental planning.
Zeltmann graduated with honors from Beloit College, earning a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and political science. He later received a master of arts degree and doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in physical chemistry.
Zeltmann and his wife, Susan, have two children, Laura and John, and reside in Clifton Park, N.Y.
