Oglethorpe Power names Messersmith as vice president of plant operations

ATLANTA, May 2, 2002 -- Oglethorpe Power Corp. has named James A. "Jim" Messersmith as vice president of the newly created plant operations division. In this role, he will be responsible for the operation of all gas-fired and hydroelectric generating facilities.

Oglethorpe Power currently operates gas and hydro units with a capacity of about 1,558 megawatts (MW), with another 650 MW scheduled for operation in 2002 and 2003. Some of these units are owned by the corporation, while others are owned by participating Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs), but operated by Oglethorpe Power.

Messersmith began work at Oglethorpe Power in 1991 as the assistant plant manager at the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant near Rome, Ga., and was promoted to plant manager in 1994. In January 2001, he was promoted to director of plant operations.

He has been working in the power generation industry for 27 years, after starting his career with Public Service Indiana (now Cinergy) at the Gibson Generating Station. He also served as the operations superintendent and startup manager at the St. Johns River Power Park in Jacksonville, Fla.

He holds a BS degree in accounting from Indiana State University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Evansville. He and his wife Tonia currently live in Rome, Ga.

Oglethorpe Power Corporation is a power supply cooperative serving 39 of Georgia's 42 customer-owned EMCs. These EMCs provide retail electric service to more than 3.4 million Georgians in about two-thirds of the state's land area. The corporation has assets of about $4.5 billion and annual revenues of about $1.1 billion.
