Chicago, Il., April 30, 2002 -- Sargent & Lundy LLC has been awarded a contract by Salt River Project to perform engineering, procurement support, construction support, and start-up support for the Santan Expansion Project.
This new 825-MW gas combustion turbine combined-cycle facility (a new 2x2x1 unit and a new 1x1x1 unit) will be installed at the existing Santan Generating Station site in Gilbert, AZ. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2005.
Environmental and Good Neighbor Priorities The expansion project is being located on 20 acres of an existing 120-acre site. The current Santan power station serves an area that has experienced soaring growth since its installation in the mid-1970s. With residential neighborhoods prevalent around the site, Salt River Project placed a high priority on ensuring that the new station will be a good neighbor. The station design will incorporate extensive state-of-the art environmental controls as well as multiple measures to mitigate potential visual, noise, and other impacts.
Criteria for the Santan Expansion Project include:
* meeting the Lowest Achievable Emission Rate for carbon monoxide (CO), NOx, volatile organic carbons (VOCs), and particulate matter less than ten micron in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) * no visible emissions, smoke, dust or odors * continuous emission monitoring * technologies to reduce the size of the cooling tower steam plumes * renewable water sources including SRP surface water, CAP water, and effluent water for cooling and plant use * installation of the heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) approximately 15 feet below grade and careful stack positioning to minimize off-site visibility * sound reduction technology to meet HUD residential noise guidelines, EPA residential noise guidelines, and city standards.
This locally sited new power resource will help ensure SRP's ability to meet forecasted demand and to maintain a reliable supply of power for Arizona's Southeast Valley, where energy needs continue rapid growth. During peak demand periods, the plant will provide 100 percent of its power to local customers.
Salt River Project (SRP) is one of Arizona's largest electric utilities and water providers. With generating capacity of more than 5,000 megawatts, SRP is the nation's second-largest public power utility. It serves more than 40,000 residential, business and industrial customers with electric power throughout a 2,900-square-mile area in central Arizona. SRP operates or participates in seven major power plants and numerous other generating stations in four states.
