ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 29, 2002 -- Florida Power announced a short list of four bidders to its 2005 request for proposals (RFP) to meet the company's requirements for additional electric generation capacity of approximately 500 MW, beginning December 1, 2005.
Three of the four bidders to make the short list have proposed to build new combined-cycle power plants comparable to the planned third unit at Florida Power's Hines Energy Complex in Polk County, Fla. The fourth bidder on the short list has proposed a sale from its system of power plants. Two of the proposed new combined-cycle plants would also be located in Polk County. Florida Power will evaluate the proposals along with the Hines unit 3 to determine the most cost-effective means of providing the added generation resource on behalf of customers.

The bidders on the short list and the location of their proposed plants are:
* Competitive Power Ventures (Polk County)
* South Pond Energy Park (Hardee County)
* Reliant Energy Power Generation (Polk County)
* Tampa Electric's bid to sell from its generation system has made it onto the short list as well.
The company expects to announce a final list May 31.
