Business & labor organizations launch joint ad effort in support of comprehensive energy plan

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2002 -- Business and labor leaders this week launched a print and radio advertising campaign designed to spur Senate action on a comprehensive energy plan.

"The fact that business and labor -- two groups who don't always agree on public policy -- have come together underscores the importance of a comprehensive energy plan to America's economy and national security," said Luke Popovich, spokesperson for the Alliance for Energy & Economic Growth, which is sponsoring the ad campaign.

The radio portion of the ad campaign features James Hoffa, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; Thomas Donohue, President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Frank Hanley, President of the International Union of Operating Engineers; and Jerry Jasinowski, President of the National Association of Manufacturers.

The advertising notes the importance of energy to the U.S. economy and the need to expand domestic energy supplies. Since the 1970s U.S. energy use has grown twice as fast as domestic energy production, making the country more dependent on foreign sources of energy.

"The nation needs a comprehensive plan to boost domestic energy production, use energy more efficiently and upgrade and modernize the infrastructure needed to get energy to homes and businesses," said Popovich, "and we need to do this without strangling markets with red tape."

The Alliance for Energy & Economic Growth (AEEG) is a broad-based, 1,350 member-strong coalition of large and small businesses, labor unions and companies that generate and distribute energy to homes and workplaces.
