WATERFORD, Conn., Feb. 21, 2002 -- Millstone Power Station, the Dominion nuclear power station that provides approximately 15 percent of New England's electricity, completed a station record 283-day consecutive run of its two units last week.
Since April 2001, the station has run at a 95.7 percent capacity factor. During the station record run, the two units provided more than 14 million megawatt-hours of electricity to customers throughout the region.
"The safe and reliable operation of our nuclear units is our primary focus," said David Christian, Dominion senior vice president-Nuclear Operations and Chief Nuclear Officer. "For Dominion, safe operations go hand- in-hand with efficient, reliable operations. Millstone's employees deserve the credit for making that happen in New England."
Millstone Unit 3, a 1,150-megawatt pressurized water reactor, has been operating for 328 consecutive days. Millstone Unit 2, an 870-megawatt pressurized water reactor, entered a refueling outage on Feb. 16. Dominion also operates two nuclear stations in Virginia, North Anna and Surry, each with two pressurized water reactors that produce a total of 3,400 megawatts.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers of energy, with a production capability of more than 3 trillion British thermal unit of energy per day.
