Westinghouse announces alliance with Entergy

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 21, 2002 -- Westinghouse Electric Co. today announced a multi-year agreement designating Westinghouse as exclusive provider of a broad range of engineering, field services, replacement parts and instrumentation and controls for Entergy's fleet of nuclear reactors.

The value of the alliance is significant to both Westinghouse and Entergy and will vary based on improvements in the operating performance of the Entergy fleet, which consists of five pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and four boiling water reactors (BWRs) located in the Northeast and South.

The alliance is primarily focused on Entergy's PWR fleet, but it could also include some products and services for the BWRs.

Dr. Charles W. Pryor, Jr., president and CEO of Westinghouse, said the agreement is an excellent example of how the nuclear industry is working together to continually enhance the efficiency of operating plants to become even more competitive with other generation sources.

"Nuclear power is safe, economical and free of air pollutants," Dr. Pryor said. "The agreement between Westinghouse and Entergy is innovative, and both companies will share in the rewards of improved plant performance."

Entergy, a global energy company based in New Orleans, is the third largest power generator in the nation with more than 30,000 megawatts of generating capacity, about $11 billion in revenue and over 2.5 million customers. The nuclear businesses of Entergy Corporation are headquartered in Jackson, Miss.

Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, wholly owned by BNFL plc, offers a wide range of nuclear plant products and services to utilities around the world, including fuel, spent fuel management, service and maintenance, nuclear automation, and advanced nuclear plant designs. Westinghouse supplied the world's first commercial pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant in 1957 and has designed the world's largest installed base of operating nuclear power plants.

BNFL is a specialist in nuclear technology and a global supplier of nuclear fuel, products and services. Currently, around a third of BNFL's sales comes from the Westinghouse business which manufactures fuel and services nuclear reactors around the world; a quarter comes from the recycling of UK and overseas customers' fuel; a further quarter of sales comes from operating the UK's Magnox power stations. The remainder of BNFL's business is in waste management and decommissioning, which is expected to grow significantly in the years ahead.
