NYC Astoria 500-MW plant opens

23 May 2006 -- New York City area added to its capacity yesterday with the beginning of commercial operation of the SCS Astoria Energy LLC's natural gas-fired 500-MW power plant, Reuters reported.

The $1 billion combined-cycle unit has a 10-year contract with the local power company, Consolidated Edison Co. of New York Inc. A proposed second phase would add another 500-MW capacity to the plant, according to the news organization.

SCS Energy LLC started development of the project in 1999 and holds equity interest in the plant. Steinway Creek Electric Generating Co. LLC owns 50 percent of Astoria Energy and a group of private investors owns the other 50 percent.
