How To Submit An Article
Power Engineering and Power Engineering International welcomes article submittals addressing topics of timely interest to the power generation community. To share your expertise and experience with Power Engineering's or Power Engineering International's readers, simply follow the steps below.

Step 1 - Propose a Topic
Submit an abstract or outline to pe@pennwell.com for Power Engineering or peinews@pennwell.com for Power Engineering International. Topics should be of broad technical and/or business interest to the Power Engineering or Power Engineering International readership or should address details and lessons learned associated with a specific project or projects. Commercial sales pitches and blatant product endorsements will not be accepted, although product coverage in the context of an application to a specific power plant project is permitted.

The Power Engineering or Power Engineering International staff will review the proposal to determine if the topic is of editorial interest. The editorial staff also might provide suggestions and comments for consideration in modifying the abstract/outline and in developing the full manuscript.

Power Engineering and Power Engineering International is particularly interested in articles sharing the end user's point of view. Therefore, while not absolutely required, authorship or co-authorship with an owner/operator of power plant assets is strongly encouraged.

Step 2 - Develop the Article
From the approved abstract/outline, develop an article of 2,000-2,400 words, which will translate into 3-4 pages in the printed magazine. Submit as a Word or text file, along with relevant graphics (photos, figures, tables). Please do not embed photos or figures into the text.

Photos can be submitted as glossy prints, 5x7 inches or larger, but electronic files are preferred. High-resolution EPS, TIF or JPG files are required for proper reproduction and printing in the magazine. Minimum resolution is 300 dpi (dots per inch).

For tables, figures, or other charts, submit electronically if possible, although hard copies are acceptable as well. In most cases, the artwork will have to be reproduced to match the magazine's style and color preferences.

Step 3 - Article Acceptance
Within a few weeks or sooner of receiving the full manuscript, Power Engineering or Power Engineering International will notify the submitting party whether or not the manuscript has been officially accepted for publication. At that time, the editorial staff will provide a rough indication for when it will be published. Because the magazines work several months in advance for preparing editorial content, publication will lag submittal by 2-3 months or more, depending on space availability and editorial mix.

Step 4 - Article Editing
About a month-and-a-half before the article is to be published, a Power Engineering or Power Engineering International editor will edit the article to the magazine's specifications. During this process, the editor may request clarification on certain issues or ask for additional detail. When complete, the editor will send a copy of the edited manuscript to the submitter for final review. This gives the contributor an opportunity to review the changes made during the editing process, make any final corrections, and suggest modifications.

At this time, the editor will also send a "Contributed Article Agreement" form for the author(s) to read and sign. This form gives PennWell Corp., which publishes Power Engineering and Power Engineering International, the right to make other use of the published form of the article such as selling reprints or posting it on PennWell web sites. It does not restrict the author's use of the original manuscript, to which the author still will hold the copyright.

Step 5 - Stay in Touch
During the entire process, Power Engineering and Power Engineering International encourages submitting authors to stay in touch with the editorial staff - to inquire about the status of a manuscript, to ask questions about topic relevance, to understand why editorial changes were made, etc. Please call or e-mail Brian Schimmoller, Managing Editor of Power Engineering, at +1 918-831-9866 or brians@pennwell.com with any questions relating or Power Engineering or Nigel Blackaby, Features Editor, Power Engineering International at +44 1992 656 607 or nigelb@pennwell.com.
