17 August 2005 - Days after South Korea announced it was aiming to have a hydrogen based economy by 2040, the country has said it is to work with the US to develop a nuclear reactor that will produce large quantities of the fuel cell fuel.
Development of the next generation nuclear reactor will involve the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and Doosan Heavy Industry and Construction Company who will work in partnership with General Atomics, a US based nuclear technology company which is a member of the US Department of Energy's nuclear initiatives.
An official from the South Korean Ministry of Science and Economy said: "The project is part of an ongoing effort by the government to join a multinational effort to build a fourth generation nuclear power system that makes use of the so-called very high temperature gas cooled reactor."
It is believed that a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the two nations in the next few months to confirm the roles and details of the project. Research centres are likely to be built at General Atomics headquarters in San Diego and at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in Daejeon.
South Korea and the US are both members of a six-nation coalition that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through technological advances.
